The New York Rangers' Artemi Panarin rejected a team-friendly contract from Chris Drury. NHL Insider Mollie Walker believes that Panarin, who has been one player whose helped take the team to the playoffs consistently, won't be giving in to Chris Drury's offers anytime soon with the leverage he has.
When the New York Rangers offered forward Artemi Panarin a
team-friendly deal, no one was sure what would occur. Instead of taking a hometown discount, the Russian superstar is sticking to his guns.
With news of
Kirill Kaprizov's $17 million average annual value (AAV), we're sure he's gotten wind of much the team has paid him.
It's difficult to know how much Panarin will ask for, given that we're not sitting in contract negotiations.
But with his kind of leverage he has over the Rangers, per Mollie Walker, they don't make the playoffs "without" him, he could ask for a fair share of the cap space.
New York Rangers Artemi Panarin's Next Contract
Panarin's 7-year, $81.5 million ($11.642 million AAV) deal will expire at the end of the 2025-26 season, and it's difficult to see where this will end. It could end up with the Russian forward walking into free agency, or maybe a last-minute deal with Chris Drury.
Before it was reported that he rejected an offer from the Rangers, he
refused to comment on the ongoing negotiations.
He has played 430 games with the New York Rangers and scored 550 points (186-364) in that time frame.
The New York Rangers don't make it to the playoffs without Artemi Panarin, and it's something they'll have to considering when they make him another offer.
