With the New York Rangers looking to put themselves back into win-now territory at the end of the year, could their fortunes change during the trade deadline? The team could circle back to top-six forward Martin Necas, of the Colorado Avalanche.
Martin Necas will be a
pending UFA at the end of the 2025-26 NHL season, and it is of utmost importance that the team checks in on his availability in March and July.
After his miscalculation of the situation in Edmonton, he will need to stay engaged on Necas. One NHL Insider, James Murphy of
RG Media, believes that the Rangers could be one team to land the superstar.
«I'll tell you one thing: when it comes to trading for him at least as a rental, I'd be watching the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Rangers. if, as I expect, the Rangers will be back in the playoff hunt.»
With the Rangers gearing up for a playoff run in the future with Head Coach Mike Sullivan, it wouldn't be unreasonable to think New York could be a landing spot for the Avalanche forward.
Martin Necas: Rental or Long-term Option for the Rangers?
Though it might cost more to re-sign him, rather than trading for him as a rental. And win-now teams typically spend the cap, which this situation might require if they want him to stick around long-term.
The Rangers were
said to be in on Necas while he was still a Hurricane. That deal wouldn't work out, as the team dealt
Mikko Rantanen in a three-way trade with the Blackhawks that landed him.
Now, with the team having to sign defenseman
Cale Makar in the future, they will have to consider what fat to trim from the salary cap. That could end up being Martin Necas.
The main issue here, i the team would ideally like to keep Necas, a goal-scoring winger, around longer than his remaining deal.
That will require ingenuity, which we know Chris Drury is more than capable of.
