The offseason is ongoing, as rosters have yet to be set and teams still could make big moves. While Chris Drury hasn't wowed us lately, depth center Jonny Brodzinski has with his skills, in the 4-v-4 hockey league in Minnesota, "Da Beauty League".
"Da Beauty League" is a recreation league played in Minnesota by NHLers during the offseason. It was originally founded in 2015, and has provided the state of hockey entertainment when the Golden Gophers and Wild aren't running hot for the season.
Jonny Brodzinski Shows Off His Offensive Skills At 'Da Beauty League'
For Jonny Brodzinski, this is his way of staying competitive and keeping an edge. During a game in Da Beauty League this week, he scored a hat trick.
It is a 4-v-4 competitive league, and doesn't allow checking. Given how players want to stay healthy during the offseason, it's a rule that makes sense.
Defense is optional, which is surprising for a league full of NHL players, and typically, there is a lot of open ice play.
Brodzinski has it down to a science and has averaged 3.4 PPG in what could be considered a glorified shinny league.
For goalies, this league is pain, as many high-profile stars suit up for the summer, while goalies get peppered. For that reason alone, many goalies don't choose to play in the league.
While this is primarily just a summer workout, it'll help keep him prepared for a training camp that should be very competitive with prospects who will be hunting for a spot in the lineup.
It'll be interesting to see where he'll slot into the Rangers' regular lineup, given how Sullivan hasn't seen or built the Rangers to his liking yet. He could end up as a center, depending on how Sullivan utilizes Mika Zibanejad.
Until then, he'll keep plugging away in Da Beauty League.
