The New York Rangers and other NHL teams will be privy to a new deal that ensures that hockey will be seen by a broader audience. The deal with DAZN is a multi-year deal, which will see NHL.TV transition into a new carrier, giving the network more eyes and ears, internationally.
The New York Rangers and 31 other NHL teams will be given a broad audience in a deal that is set to expand the team's reach for audiences worldwide.
The league signed a deal with DAZN, which will fold NHL.TV into the streaming provider, and make the NHL available internationally to 200 countries.
A move that we wouldn't have expected out of Gary Bettman and company not too long ago, given how they typically operate.
Typically, DAZN covers sports leagues that aren't in the realm of hockey, including the UFC and NFL.
NHL: DAZN's Reach Will Garner 120 Million and more
The NHL will have an expanded reach of 120 million viewers nightly, thanks to the multi-year streaming deal. Games will be live on their streaming device, including Smart TVs, mobile phones, tablets, and even gaming devices.
DAZN's CEO Shay Segev's statement following the fresh ink on the new deal signed with the NHL:
"DAZN's landmark agreement with the NHL is a significant step forward in our mission to deliver the most exciting sports action to fans across the globe. We're excited to bring a premium North American sports property to a broad international audience through an innovative, accessible, and immersive viewing experience. By combining the NHL's thrilling content with DAZN's global platform and best-in-class technology, we're unlocking new ways for fans to connect with the game they love -- anytime, anywhere, and on any device."
While the NHL's COO, Steve McArdle, would follow up that statement with an exciting statement about the growth of the sport of hockey in this new era:
«The NHL is a global League, and with 30 percent of our Players born outside of North America, engaging our international fans is a significant priority. Media distribution is at the core of our global strategy, and we are thrilled to partner with DAZN to continue to expand our global reach and engage with our fast-growing international fan base. Our shared commitment to innovation, gold standard technology and providing an exceptional content delivery service will allow us to deliver NHL content to hockey fans around the world on the platforms they prefer.»
Even after all of this, the NHL has reserved the right to blackout games in certain countries, but will be available On Demand afterward.
While this is quite a step forward for the NHL, and is a way of growing the game, blacking out games is a primitive tool of control, and will limit the excitement of the game wherever it's implemented.
