Malcolm Spence was a 2nd-round draft pick of the New York Rangers in the 2025 NHL Draft. The 43rd overall pick will be competing this week for a spot on Canada's national team in the IIHF 2025 World Junior Championships.

Malcolm Spence is a 2nd-round draft pick of the New York Rangers, selected 43rd overall in 2025. The Rangers' newest top prospect will be competing with some of the best of the best in the world to find a spot on Canada's roster in 2026.
Spencer has a lot to prove, and Steven Ellis of Daily Faceoff believes that he's one to watch out for during Canada's intrasquad games. The first of which took place on Tuesday.
Though he didn't score, «Spence was one of the more energetic forwards for Canada White. I loved how hard he chased after Red's top players and didn't seem to care that it was an intrasquad game,» Ellis noted.

Spencer's 200-foot-game, and his fierce competitive nature were partly the reason the team selected him 43rd overall. His sizable frame, at 6-foot-1 and 203 pounds, is another, along with his offensive prowess, scoring 73 points (32-41), of course, another solid choice for Chris Drury.
«Spence has never been the most skilled or offensive player, but he never takes a shift off and is always trying to make things happen,» Ellis remarked.
It's obvious why Chris Drury emphasized players with size and grit this season during the NHL draft, and Spence embodies what he wants the Rangers of the future to be.
While he's nowhere near NHL-ready, he'll have to simmer a year in the University of Michigan, growing his skills on the ice, in addition to his leadership skills, which we saw in Erie in the OHL.
Spence will have to seriously impress coaches for Team Canada in Minnesota this year, as he's been featured in a bottom-six role. Originally thought to be a healthy scratch, he'll be a part of the fourth line against Finland on Wednesday.
For now, he'll have to work extra hard to make it onto Canada's team in 2026, as the competition is unrelenting.
