We have tragic news to report, as longtime QMJHL referee Nicolas Dutil has passed away at he young age of 52. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and the hockey community are mourning the passing of Dutil, who held a long career in the league.

The hockey world has lost another one, as it was reported on Tuesday, that Nicolas Dutil passed away at the age of 52.
Dutil was a referee in the QMJHL, in the CHL, and was a referee for 28 years.
"Sad news in the hockey world: former referee Nicolas Dutil passed away this morning at the age of 52.

He was an official in the QMJHL for 28 years.

My deepest condolences to his loved ones."

- Mikaël Lalancette

Dutil in 2018 reached a milestone in his career as a referee, as he officiated 1,000 games nearly seven years ago. A milestone that not many get to see and experience in their careers.
The QMJHL would later express sympathy for the Dutil family with a statement released today:

The entire QMJHL family is saddened to learn of the passing of Nicolas Dutil, one of the greatest referees in league history. Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones.

Rest in peace Nic, and thank you for everything!

Nicolas Dutil was a Beloved Figure in the QMJHL

Dutil was a figurehead for referees on the ice, as fans would get to know the official for his professionalism on the ice.
The longtime ref is another hockey persona who has passed away too young, leaving another knowledge gap in the sport.
We send our deepest condolences to the Dutil family, friends, and his colleagues.
