Devastating news strikes as former Metro Division legend sadly passes away at 84-years old
The hockey community is beguiled by the loss of former NHL defenseman Ed Van Impe, who spent his playing time with the Chicago Blackhawks, Philadelphia Flyers, and Pittsburgh Penguins. Impe passed away at the age of 84.
Ed Van Impe is a former Philadelphia Flyer and three-time NHL All-Star. He also held the Flyers Captaincy, as the second Flyer ever to wear the "C".
Impre, at the age of 84, left us all too early.
Ed Van Impe's career began in the WHL when he suited up for the Senior division's Calgary Stampeders. He'd join the AHL's Buffalo Bisons soon after, and would sign his first contract in the NHL with the original-six team, the Chicago Blackhawks.
Impe wasn't known for his size; at 5'10", 250 pounds, he didn't have much of an intimidation factor, but put his size to use and earned a spot in the Calder Trophy voting, in second place.
Not only did Impe make an impact during his rookie season, in 1966-67, he'd be a vital piece in the Flyers Stanley Cup wins in 1974, and 1975.
He scored 7 points in 37 games during both playoff pushes with the Philadelphia Flyers, as a role player in the organization.
Impe was known primarily for his contributions on the blue line as a tough and reliable defenseman.
He'd later be traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins halfway through the 1975-76 NHL season, and would choose to retire at the end of the 1976-77 season.
Impe would finish his NHL career playing a total of 700 career games, and 153 points scored.
Our deepest condolences go out to the Impe family, friends, and colleagues during this trying time.
