The New York Rangers are one of the teams favored to land former Stanley Cup champion Erik Johnson. Johnson is a former 1st-round pick in 2006, and began his career with the St. Louis Blues. He'd win the Cup in 2022 with the Colorado Avalanche and has played for the Philadelphia Flyers and Buffalo Sabres along the way.
The Rangers experienced a leaky defense last season, leaving goalie Igor Shester high and dry often.
Now, with former Stanley Cup champion
Erik Johnson available, the team could be one of the multiple NHL teams that could land the shutdown defenseman.
Originally a 1st-round pick in 2006, his career would begin in the NHL with the St. Louis Blues, and would peak in 2022 as a Stanley Cup champion with the Colorado Avalanche.
The New York Rangers Acquire Erik Johnson for a professional tryout
An article from
Heavy.com proposed that Johnson would be a perfect fit for the Rangers.
"Erik Johnson is nowhere near a 20-minute-a-night blueliner at this point in his career. But he is a physical, defensively sound D-man who could fit in nicely as a seventh or eighth defenseman.
Assuming he signs for a league-minimum deal, the NY Rangers could carry him on the roster all season without risking surpassing the cap ceiling. That situation makes him an interesting alternative at training camp this fall."
Johnson would be a solid addition for his leadership experience and a significant amount of playoff games played in the NHL.
He's played 1,023 games in the NHL with 95-253-348, and has 1,717 blocks and 1,695 hits over his career.
