The New York Rangers' own James Dolan can't be proud of the spot the team sits at in the latest piece by The Athletic. Teams are ranked by contract efficiency yearly by The Athletic, and the team has dropped significantly in the ranks from 6 to 24! Is GM Chris Drury spending like a drunken sailor?

It is that time of the year when NHL analysts take a look at the business side of the sport. For The Athletic, teams are always under the microscope, whether for trades, news, or just a good roast of a GM. This time, the Rangers are on the hot seat.
This season, the news outlet did what they typically do: a story on the team's best and worst deals in the league, and then they're ranked based on how they spend their cap space.
Of all 32 teams in the NHL, the New York Rangers received a dismal 24th ranking among them all.
Simply put, players' age, their production declines, and that adds to their negative surplus value:
For the Rangers, what drives down their efficiency ranking is not only defenseman Will Borgen's contract, Igor Shesterkin's massive deal brings it down significantly, along with the age of the team.

The Rangers Whopping $21 Million in Negative Surplus Value

While defenseman Adam Fox is punching above his weight, earning only $9.5 million AAV, he's playing like a $14 million player. According to The Athletic, he's providing $18.1 million in surplus value.
While Borgen earns $4.1 million AAV a season, the way he's playing carries a negative $13.4 million surplus value. An $1.4 million player by their system.
When it comes to forwards, Mika Zibanejad is one of the higher-paid forwards on the team, and makes $8.5 million AAV, but plays like a $6.2 million player. We can see that on the ice in the past season.
As a whole, the team carries a negative surplus value of $21 million in contracts, and they will need Alexis Lafreniere, Mika Zibanejad, and Igor Shesterkin to play to their true value in order to recover from this.
