The NHL announced the tragic passing of longtime security executive, Denis Cunningham, today. Cunningham was a longtime member of the NHL and a former police officer.

The NHL is grieving the loss of former executive Dennis Cunningham, who served as the Executive Vice President of Security for the league from 1993 to 2021.
The league would issue a statement on the loss of Cunningham:
The NHL family mourns the passing of Dennis Cunningham, who served the League with distinction and unwavering commitment for 28 years, from 1993 to 2021, as Executive Vice President of Security.<./q>

Cunningham passed away on May 10th, 2025.

He began his career as an NYPD police officer, he'd stay with the department for a total of 27 years, earning honors and distinctions during his journey. After retiring as a Deputy Inspector in 1993, his new journey would begin in the NHL as Executive Vice President of Security of the NHL for a total of 28 years.

His visionary work in sport safety and large-event management earned him the Distinguished Leadership Award for Sports and Safety, recognizing his lasting contributions and thoughtful leadership in the field.

This award shows the kind of hard work he put into his career, which began when he earned his degrees from John Jay College and St. John's University. The learning never ended for Cunningham, as he earned a degree from the Columbia University School of Business and graduated from the FBI Academy.
Cunningham in 2013, when he was awarded the Distinguished Leadership Award for Sports in Safety:
I am grateful to be the recipient of the Center's Distinguished Leadership Award and would like to extend my thanks to all who have had a part in organizing this award. Together, the NCS4 and the University of Southern Mississippi are known for their focus on research, education, and outreach to the sports event security community, and to be recognized by them is an honor.

We would like to send our deepest condolences to his wife, Brigitta, son Michael, and the Cunningham family.
May he rest in peace.
