According to recent reports from a trusted NHL insider, Pierre LeBrun, the National Hockey League has just confirmed some major changes regarding the format of the regular season.

The NHL and NHLPA have agreed on terms of a new 4-year Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) during the offseason hat will enter take effect on September 16, 2026, and will expire in 2030.
The CBA signed in 2020 will run through the 2025-26 season. However, when the season ends we should expect to see some massive changes as the 2026-27 season starts.

Pierre LeBrun Confirms Major Changes Have Been Finalized

Pierre LeBru has just stated on X, that when the CBA extension was signed, the 2026-27 regular season will start in September, instead of starting during October.
The pre-season will be limited to four games, and the regular calendar will feature 84 games, and the Stanley Cup will be awarded around mid-June.
"As reported before but now the NHL has started to put it together, the regular season will begin in late September for 2026-27 and Cup awarded mid June. Pre-season shortened and regular season extended to 84 games."
Some of the biggest takeaways from this obviously being the shorter preseasons and longer regular seasons. Something that many fans have been asking for as the offseason is far to long of a wait.
With having only four preseason games, we will hopefully see less NHL players suffer injuries before the regular season starts.

More News Regarding The NHL's Newest CBA

The CBA also included several other interesting changes:
There will be a salary cap during the playoffs, there will be no more player dress code, the League's minimum wage will rise, the maximum contract length will go from eight to seven years, there will be no more "paper transactions," the NHL will be able to take part in the 2030 Olympic Games, and players entering the League after the 2025-26 season will have to wear neck guards.

Certainly some very exciting changes being made, hopefully they all turn out to be beneficial.
