Gary Bettman and the NHL have finally had enough of organizations taking advantage of their recent playoff salary cap rules, which has resulted in a major change that will begin this upcoming season.

Over the last few seasons, the NHL has been facing a ton of backlash from fans and many alike, as several teams kept taking advantage of the Long Term Injured Reserve list, in particular the Tampa Bay Lightning, Vegas Golden Knights and even the Florida Panthers using it to their advantage to win Stanley Cups.
However, this is finally about to change as a new CBA deal that is set to start for the 2026-27 season, Gary Bettman and the NHLPA have over ruled this rule.

CBA Changes Agreed Upon From Gary Bettman And The NHLPA

As the National Hockey League announced their newest CBA agreement, it was revealed that plenty of changes have been agreed upon that will keep players and fans happy.
One of those being an an increase in salary cap, which will allow teams to retain their own players more and even receive a higher payday. However, the loopholes surrounding the LTIR caused some major concern.

The NHL & NHLPA Have Agreed To A Rolling Implementation Schedule For CBA Changes

Earlier today, NHL Insider Frank Seravalli shared that the The NHL and NHLPA have agreed to a rolling implementation schedule for CBA changes, and that Stanley Cup Playoffs salary cap changes will be made this upcoming season.

Among them: the new playoff salary cap system will come into effect *this season* for the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs.
This means that when a team takes the ice in the post-season, they will have a cap for the players allowed to be in the lineup, which will put an end to organizations abusing the LTIR loophole.
