The New York sports community lost a member this weekend. Nick Mangold, a former center for the New York Jets and a Rangers diehard fan, passed away this weekend, way too young at the age of 41. The Rangers organization sent a heartfelt message to his family, friends, and colleagues.
A harrowing loss for all fans of the center, who had a working-class demeanor that appealed to the Jets fans.
He was a huge Rangers fan too, as the team acknowledged
his passing with a heartfelt tribute on "X".
New York Jets Own Issues A Statement on Nick Mangold's Passing
"Nick was more than a legendary center," Jets owner Woody Johnson said in a statement. "He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick's wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family."
No one knew until October 14th that the center had been diagnosed with a kidney disease, dating back to 2006. The disease was genetic, and to mitigate the issue surrounding it, he's been treated with dialysis.
No one in his family could donate due to the fact that he had a rare blood type (O), a tragic set of circumstances.
Mangold is being considered for induction in the Hall of Fame, along with 52 other modern-era players.
This news is bittersweet for Jets and Rangers fans, who saw his passion on the field and in MSG in person.
