We can tell the NHL season is close to starting. This week, the NHL has gone on the European Media tour, which featured New York Rangers defenseman Urho Vaakanainen. For Vaakanainen, he looks calm, cool, and collected during these days before training camp begins, then the real fun starts.
The New York Rangers have a defenseman to guard the team on the European Media Tour. Urho Vaakanainen, the tall Finnish defenseman, was the one who would represent the team during their stay in Italy, ahead of the 2026 Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Games.
For the NHL, this is a relationship-building event between the country, community, sports leagues, and fans.
Vaakanainen, who is typically used to the colder climate of Finland, undoubtedly loved to catch the sights of Italy, as they got to see the sights and sounds, in addition to offering their token of celebrity in order to grow the game.
The NHL Expands Its Reach To Italy and Beyond
For the NHL, this is more than just pictures and players speaking. This is a way to grow the game in Europe and expand.
"We're well along in the first stage of identifying potential host cities both in North America and Europe,» Daly said. «The interest level was very, very high. We hope to complete that process and be in a position to make announcements on markets and venues hopefully before the end of the regular season, if not before. It's a good process so far."
But for Vaakanainen, who is set to begin his full first year as a Blueshirt in the NHL, he should have plenty of exciting stories to tell fans.
The Finnish-born defenseman will continue to wear the Rangers blue as long as he can, and help grow the sport of hockey despite his reserved nature, as we've seen.
