The New York Rangers have been linked to three-time Stanley Cup champion Evgeni Malkin in a trade proposal. The proposal is intriguing due to the fact that Kyle Dubas is tearing down the team to the studs, and Malkin could fetch a nice haul in return. Could he find his new home in New York, with his old coach, Mike Sullivan?

After a disappointing 2024-25 season, the New York Rangers objectively need to improve. That is all across the board, as the team has, since December, moved talent regularly, with Jacob Trouba being the first to go.

Rumors Link Evgeni Malkin To The Rangers

NHL Trade Rumors' own Jeremy Tingly has linked forward Evgeni Malkin of the Penguins to the rival Rangers club. For the Rangers, he'd be a perfect win-now piece and would slot in behind J.T. Miller.
«According to multiple reports this summer, this is essentially Evgeni Malkin's last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Whether he finishes the whole year, is another story,» Tingly wrote. «The Penguins are in transition mode, as President Kyle Dubas is trying to get his roster younger, and faster, while keeping the veteran core intact, at least for now

«When it comes to potential destinations, expect to see the Vegas Golden Knights, Florida Panthers, and New York Rangers at the top of Malkin's list. The future hall-of-famer is owed $6.1 million this season against the cap, and owns the cards to his destiny with his no-movement clause,» Tingly added. «It's going to be a very interesting season in Pittsburgh. If the Penguins don't get off to a good start this year, the noise is going to increase, and trade winds will be blowing as Dubas is ready to blow everything up.»

Malkin is in the last year of his $24.4 million deal, and could be another piece that could help drag the Rangers into the playoffs.
The forward is a three-time Stanley Cup champion in 2010, 2016, and 2017. He'd also be a positive veteran presence in the locker room and would be a great mentor for players like Matt Rempe, Brennan Othmann, and Brett Berard.
Penguins Insider Josh Yohe of The Athletic believes this could be the last year Malkin suits up for the Penguins, as Kyle Dubas is prepared to cut him loose after his contract expires in 2026.
This could be a slam dunk for GM Chris Drury.
