On Sunday afternoon, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed that two players were placed on the waiver wire, giving the New York Rangers the perfect opportunity to claim either one for free.

Elliotte Friedman ended up making a post on social media on Sunday, revealing that the San Jose Sharks have placed both Lucas Carlsson, and Jack Thompson on the waiver wire.
Both players having some NHL experience under their belts, and are both on super affordable contracts that the New York Rangers can handle if needed. Both with a cap hit of just $800,000 a year.

New York Rangers Looking To Add Another Defenseman To Their Roster?

Thompson was a former third round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning, as he was drafted 93rd overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, and has since only appeared in 34 games over since then.
During those 34 games, Thompson has scored 4 goals and 6 assists for 10 points, with most of NHL appearances being with the Sharks during the 2024-25 NHL season.
On the other hand, Lucas Carlsson, who i believe would be the Rangers best bet considering he is a left handed defenseman, something they need after just losing veteran defenseman Carson Soucy due to a brutal upper-body injury.
Carlsson was selected in the fourth round by Chicago Blackhawks in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, and has since appeared in 73 NHL games split between the Chicago Blackhawks, Florida Panthers, San Jose Sharks, and Florida Panthers.
