The New York Rangers have been linked to Stanley Cup champion Jack Eichel. For the Rangers, he'd be another piece down the middle, which would push them into contention. But the question is, what is the cost? NHL Insider Frank Seravalli reveals.

The New York Rangers are desperate for help in the top six, and Jack Eichel would solve multiple issues for the team. Including depth down the middle, he has a Stanley Cup pedigree, which none of the other Rangers do at this point.
For GM Chris Drury, snagging someone like Eichel could be a real coup for the Metropolitan Division, as they will be battling it out with Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, and other top stars in the East year in and year out.
So why not grab Eichel? The cost could be an issue.

Jack Eichel's Next NHL Contract

Seravalli has a sobering outlook on Eichel's next deal:
"Eichel extension news? Nothing on that front," began Seravalli during his NHL rumor recap. "That's gonna be a really interesting news to follow because like Connor McDavid we are talking mega-primo money for Jack Eichel and the Vegas Golden Knights."

Which puts him into the territory of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and you get the picture, right?
"I don't know how they can go without him, I don't know how they could move on from him, but looking at their cap table it's hard to wedge in a really big extension," said Seravalli. "What that looks like, relative to the rest of true market value, I think what you're talking about with Jack Eichel is a $15+ million [average annual value] deal."

With the team ironically committing a significant amount of their cap space to Mitch Marner, the player who led them to their first Cup, could be a cap casualty.
"Then all of a sudden you crunch some numbers if you're looking at the Vegas Golden Knights cap situation. which is never easy, and you go 'How do they do this'" asked Seravalli.

Should GM Chris Drury commit more than $12 million AAV to someone like Jack Eichel, who can lead a team deep in the postseason?
