NHL Insider Frank Seravalli has announced the latest news between the New York Rangers and Artemi Panarin. According to Seravalli, the Rangers are okay with letting the chips fall where they may and letting him walk during free agency.
General Manager Chris Drury is bold, so bold that NHL Insider Frank Seravalli has painted an ugly picture for the Rangers.
According to the former DailyFaceOff guru, the New York Rangers are okay with letting Artemi Panarin walk into free agency, should things go south during the season.
After he
rejected a team-friendly deal from Drury and the Rangers, it appears that no new updates have been issued on the Russian forward and the team.
There's been
no word of the AAV (average annual value) the team offered him, but it wasn't enough to get the deal done, apparently.
Artemi Panarin's Disparate Season in 2024-25
The New York Rangers forward Artemi Panarin had a dismal showing in 2024-25, scoring a total of 89 points (37-52).
While he joined the rest of the team in a down year after the team won a Presidents' Trophy under Peter Laviolette.
Artemi Panarin's contract, which pays him an AAV of $11.642 million,
expires at the end of the 2025-26 season.
For now, we'll have to see whether or not he'll rebound under head coach Mike Sullivan, who intends to take the team back the playoffs.
While the cap is set to rise from $95.5 million in 2025-26 to $104 million in 2026-27, the Rangers are looking ahead to what could be a pivotal free-agent market in the summer of 2026.
This thought process has clouded Chris Drury's judgment, and it has cost him a shot at talent during the postseason, including forwards like
Brock Boeser.
