The New York Rangers could improve the blueline by engaging in trades, which would require giving up assets. Chris Drury could give up a prospect and other assets to acquire $27.3 million defenseman Rasmus Andersson from the Flames.
If the New York Rangers are to improve their shot at making the playoffs, they'll have to continue to
improve the lineup through trades.
One trade proposal from
Heavy.com sees the Rangers send a prospect, a veteran defenseman, and two draft picks in return for veteran Rasmus Andersson.
The New York Rangers Acquired $27 Million Defenseman From The Calgary Flames
The blockbuster deal is below:
The Rangers would add a two-way defenseman who could add more offense on the blueline. The Flames would receive a veteran defenseman in return in Carson Soucy, and offensive help in forward Brennan Othmann, plus two draft picks to restock the prospect pool.
If the Rangers don't get a chance to re-sign him, he'll be an expensive rental, as the $27 million defenseman is in the final year of his contract and will be a pending UFA.
NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun believes that
a trade is in the future for the veteran defenseman, who wasn't moved during the postseason.
«I mean there is a chance [Andersson remains in Calgary]. I would say it's probably still not the best of the two scenarios,» LeBrun said on Insider Trading on Sept. 24. «He nearly got dealt as we reported at the time to the Vegas Golden Knights, that trade did not materialize and here he is.
«Everyone is an adult in the room. He's ready to play his best for the Flames,» LeBrun added. «The Flames are happy to have him back I do think Andersson might potentially listen if there was an eight-year offer on the table, but right now I just don't think the team is ready to go there. We'll see where this all goes. I think more than likely a trade is still the likeliest option before the March 6 trade deadline.»
The Rangers would acquire the former 53rd overall pick, who scored 31 points (11-20) in 81 games last season. And could put themselves back on the path to win-now, with Andersson in the fold.
