Trusted Insider Confirms The New York Rangers Were One Of Many Teams Waiting On Connor McDavid

General Manager Chris Drury's plans of sitting around and waiting for free agency aren't working. As NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun confirmed the team was waiting for Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers in 2026, Stan Bowman re-signed him.
The New York Rangers have chosen to sit out on the pursuit of high-end wingers this season, and it's paid off spectacularly for other teams.
While the biggest name of them all has re-signed in Edmonton, Connor McDavid.
The Oilers Captain re-signed to a two-year $12.5 million AAV deal. As GM Stan Bowman kept the Captain around for another two seasons, the hopes of Rangers fans perished in flames as Drury watched another top-end player stay put.

confirmed the Rangers and Chris Drury were one team waiting to see what would happen with McDavid during free agency in 2026.

It was speculated that McDavid would've signed for a higher value contract ranging from $14 million to $17 million AAV.
Instead, he took a
hometown discount with the Oilers to stick around for another two years in the hopes they could secure a Stanley Cup.
The Oilers made a move to improve the goaltender depth this postseason by signing
Connor Ingram after losing out on the
John Gibson sweepstakes.
Now, is Connor Ingram going to be the one who saves the Oilers from an inevitable demise when they face off against the Panthers, or someone else, should they make it to the Stanley Cup final? We'll see.
