As we all know the New York Rangers were a pretty solid team during the 2023-24 season as they won the Presidents' Trophy and made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Final before being eliminated by the Florida Panthers.
However, things have drastically changed since then as the New York Rangers missed the playoffs the following season, something that had resulted in Peter Laviolette's firing.

Mike Sullivan Faces The Ultimate Task: Turn The New York Rangers Back Into Contenders

The 57-year old coach just recently revealed that he understands the challenges that await him as he enters the 2025-26 season with the mindset of turning the New York Rangers back into a true Stanley Cup contender.
«I know what our challenge is and that's part of the conversation I've had with some of the players throughout the course of this offseason,» Sullivan said via Dan Rosen of NHL.com. «When you look at the roster on paper it's a very talented group. There is, I think, the makings of being a real competitive team.»

Now, Mike Sullivan didn't specify what those exact challenges are, but its clear that he see's a talented group of hockey players who lost their way last season. Something that he pointed out during his introductory press conference with the Rangers.
«My message is that talent alone doesn't win. You've got to become a team. You can't score your way to championships. You've got to be able to defend and keep it out of your net,» Sullivan said. «If you're committed and you value those things, then you give yourself a chance.»

The two-time Stanley Cup winning head coach will have his work cut out for him as he will need to create a strong culture within the Rangers organization.
