David Quinn begins his redemption tour with Rangers fans in 2025-26 as a member of Mike Sullivan's coaching staff. Quinn left as an unpopular former head coach, with only one trip to the playoffs during his three-year tenure, and was unable to beat their rivals, the Carolina Hurricanes.
While
David Quinn didn't excel as a head coach, he could thrive in New York as Mike Sullivan's assistant.
For 2025-26 is a gift for Quinn, who, in all circumstances, we never expected a return to the organization, given his dismal 96-87-25 record in New York.
Despite not being able to thrive in New York, Sullivan could help him find his groove as an assistant for the Blueshirts, coaching the team's power-play.
His special team's work in Pittsburgh speaks for itself, really:
This past season, he helped the Pittsburgh Penguins' power play score on 25.8% of opportunities, good enough for sixth best in the NHL. The Pens' power-play also scored 57 goals, good for seventh in the league.
His shortcomings are well documented, but his power-play helped the Rangers thrive before, and will again.
His leadership could improve the team's standings, as this past season under Peter Laviolette, they had a 17.6 power-play percentage, good enough only for 28th in the entire NHL.
If he could help turn around struggling Rangers veterans, like
Mika Zibanejad, who was successful under him before, scoring 74 points (30-44) in his first season in New York.
While under a shortened season, Zibanejad went on a tear, scoring 75 in 57.
