After the New York Rangers didn't extend a qualifying offer to forward Arthur Kaliyev, he was free to find a new home in the NHL. Insider Elliotte Friedman reported today on the 2nd-day of free agency that Kaliyev had signed with GM Steve Staios and the Ottawa Senators.
The New York Rangers had to cut talent loose at the beginning of free agency that weren't in their long-term plans. That happened to be Arthur Kaliyev.
Kaliyev would suffer an upper-body injury in March and be taken out of the lineup for the rest of the season. A bad break for someone who desperately wants to find a full-time job in the NHL.
He'd been bouncing between the AHL and NHL during his time in Los Angeles and never could crack the roster.
Now, after being let loose by GM Chris Drury, he's found a new home with the Ottawa Senators.
Kaliyev has only played 202 games in the NHL, split between the Rangers and the Kings, scoring 75 points (38-37).
Kaliyev, 24, will be joining an Ottawa Senators team that has higher ambitions for the 2025-26 season. After a short trip to the playoffs, they hope to replicate that again, except staying in playoff contention longer than a round.
He will be playing under a two-way contract with the Senators, with no AAV to be announced as of yet.
Kaliyev was drafted 33rd overall lin the 2019 NHL Draft by the Los Angeles Kings, and will now be joining his 3rd NHL organization.
In 14 games played with the Rangers, he only tallied 4 points (3-1).
