After failing to make the New York Rangers' opening night roster again, the team sent Brennan Othmann packing to the AHL. The Rangers prospect, who is a call-up for the team while Matt Rempe is injured, shared his thoughts about the snub from the team.
Brennan Othmann got a 22-game audition for the Rangers last season, but didn't leave a great impression on Peter Laviolette. His fortunes fared no better this year, as he was sent down to the AHL after training camp.
While the former 1st-round pick has been considered one of the team's top prospects, the snub has to be disheartening, right?
Brennan Othmann: A trade chip?
While he did acknowledge that he needs to improve his game, whatever he's been doing in the AHL hasn't helped him, as he's now been snubbed by two coaches, Mike Sullivan and Peter Laviolette.
Sullivan's criticism echoes an all-encompassing improvement in his play:
«We've had a number of discussions around what that pathway might look like for him to carve a role on the New York Rangers,» Sullivan said. «A lot of the discussion we had just talked about conscientious play, attention to detail, defensively, away from the puck, playing within structure, having some predictability and reliability and dependability around his game.
So while he was disappointed, the Rangers have given him a list of what to improve on before he can make the jump into the NHL.
The
going price for Othmann at the moment seems to be "AHL prospects", which opens up the teams that could make a play for him.
In 4 games this season, he's scored a point for the Hartford Wolfpack.
