It appears that a new name has emerged as a potential replacement for New York Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello who happens to be current Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan.
The former New York Rangers star has been at the helm of the Maple Leafs for the past 10 years and there's a strong sense that his tenure with the team is coming to an end.
Maple Leafs looking to commit major change this summer
The Maple Leafs suffered another fatal blow in their quest for a Stanley Cup as the team crashed and burned against the Florida Panthers in Game 7 on Sunday.
This will be the Maple Leafs 9th season in a row that they have either failed to make it past the first or second round and their core 4 stars were rendered completely ineffective as the series prevailed against the Panthers.
Many pundits within the organization and around the NHL feel that Shanahan's time in Toronto is over and that Maple Leaf Sports, and Entertainment President Keith Pelley will swing the axe and remove Shanahan from the organization.
Sportsnet NHL analyst and former New York Rangers Nick Kypreos reported that the Maple Leafs Presidents' job may be eliminated which has been a trend over the past several years with many NHS organizations.
«Make no mistake, over the course of 10 years, this has been Brendan Shanahan's team,» the former Rangers forward said. «He's the one that hired (ex-GM) Kyle Dubas. He's the one at the end of the day who changed coaches all of it fell on the watch of Brendan Shanahan. I think there was a level of respect for Brendan over his playing career, to give him an opportunity.
«He's lived it. He's won championships on Detroit - surely he can find a way to get the right mix, the right players, the right character together to win a Stanley Cup. But now that he's doubled down and tripled down on the core (players) and they didn't come through, there's going to be a level of changes. We'll see where ownership now goes with this whole role of a president. Maybe they don't need one. Maybe they move on from Brendan Shanahan and don't replace a president.»

Islanders will consider Shanahan as a possible replacement
The Islanders organization has been interviewing several people including Mattieu Darche of the Tampa Bay Lightning and former Montreal general manager Marc Bergevin.
It's quite possible the team is waiting to have a chance to speak to Shanahan as he does not have a contract past this season and if the Maple Leafs make their decision within the next 48 hours to let him go, it's quite likely the team will want to speak and potentially hire him as their next president.
It would mean that he would have say and who the next general manager would be for the Islanders and that remains to be seen as the offseason has begun for Long Island.
