GM Chris Drury saw fit to hand Juuso Parssinen a two-year extension before the season ended. Now, as 2025-2026 approaches, the Colorado Avalanche trade acquisition will have to prove himself to the team and fans.
Juuso Parssinen originally seemed to be a cap dump for the Colorado Avalanche when the deal went through. Chris Drury put out that idea, by handed Parssinen a two-year deal, which is quite troubling, give how difficult the offseason will be.
His new cap hit with the Rangers will be $1.25 million AAV. And as someone who was just known as a depth player, who has only played 37 total games split between the Colorado Avalanche and Nashville Predators, he's failed to deliver more than bottom-six numbers.
Scoring 5 points (2 goals, 3 assists) with the Predators, in 15 games, while with the Avalanche, 6 points (2 goals, 4 assists), he'll need to show he's worth more investment in 2025.
As a 7th-round pick, not too much was expected out of him in either Colorado or Nashville.
He'll need to find the play that gave him some notoriety in 2022-2023.
He excelled in the Liiga, where he put up good offensive numbers. His size, skating ability and willingness to play a two-way game should serve him well in the NHL, even if he does not light up the scoreboard.
In his 11 games with the Rangers, he'd find the scoresheet and post 5 points (2 goals, 3 assists).
However, his uphill battle is all analytics and puck possession:
In a very small sample, with emphasis on small, he posted a Corsi for Percentage of 36.57, an expected goals for percentage of 35.6, and a goals for percentage of 57.46.
In order for him to remain a solid option on the Rangers' bottom-six, he'll need to work on controlling the play instead of chasing it, like he's done with the Rangers and the Predators.
However, it's difficult to see how a declining forward was given an extension when his stats look like this.
With the Avalanche his slash line included a 67.1 GF%, a 53.47 CF%, and a xGF% of 45.71. And with the Predators he had a 19.87 GF%, a 45.48 CF%, and a 37.2 xGF%
