Capitals rookie has night of his life after two-year battle with cancer
As much as the Rangers and the Capitals have a bitter rivalry, you can't help not smile for this young rookie who had the night of his life after scoring his first career goal in the NHL.
Ivan Miroshnichenko's was moving along smoothly up until two years ago when he received the worst diagnosis anyone could get that he had cancer.
His diagnosis was Hodgkin's lymphoma in which he began a new battle in saving his life.
During his treatments, he received a phone call from Mario Lemieux who was also diagnosed with the same disease who gave him some great advice.
His story with Mario, the Penguins and the NHL came full circle tonight when he was in Pittsburgh facing off against the Penguins scoring his first goal.
The other celebration on the bench and on the ice was infectious to watch as he was overjoyed by getting this goal which meant so much to him especially after what he has just gone through.
Alex Ovechkin was overjoyed for the 20-year-old as he has played five games for the capitals with his lone goal and four penalty minutes.
The Capitals season has been nothing but a disaster, and being well out of a playoff spot certainly gives this moment a little more to cheer for.
