NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman dropped another juicy bit of information on why the Metropolitan Division team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, are up for grabs, and Mario Lemieux is in the hunt. For the Fenway Sports Group, it's up for sale due to the FSG losing a partner.

With news of a sale of the Pittsburgh Penguins hitting the airwaves, the Metropolitan Division looks to get interesting again. The Fenway Sports Group bought the team in 2021 and was unable to make any significant gains in the NHL.
Now, as they seek to sell the team they've owned the past four years, NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman dropped an interesting bit of information on why the team is up for sale.
Elliotte Friedman mentioned that the biggest hockey fan of the group, David Beeston, exited the organization:
"I had a couple say that David Beeston, who was part of their group and left, he was the biggest hockey fan that group had," revealed Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast. "When he left, it wasn't the same."

The second reason is even more damning, considering the breadth of Gary Bettman's unchecked powers:
"Someone I know who owns a team in another sport, he said that 'There's no commissioner who has more power in their sport than Gary Bettman,'" revealed Friedman. "He said 'Rob Manfred in baseball, he doesn't have the control that Bettman has. Roger Goodell in Football, nobody is telling Jerry Jones what to do, even Adam Silver in basketball.' This guy said to me 'No commissioner has a hold on their sport more than Bettman does' and he wonders if Fenway, which is used to more control in the other sports, just didn't like that."

The 32 Thoughts Podcast; Elliotte Friedman was surprised when the team hadn't been sold at the end of the week. But expects a deal to manifest in the future.
"When I reported it on Monday I thought that maybe it happens this week, but we'll see where it all goes," concluded Friedman.

If Bettman can indirectly push the FSG out of the NHL because of the autocratic nature of his position, what does that say about the league?
