New Reports Confirm Mike Sullivan Was Forced Out Of The Penguins Organization: Per Trusted Insider
According to reports from The Athletic's Josh Yohe, the departure of coach Mike Sullivan from the Pittsburgh Penguins was messier than advertised. Now leading the New York Rangers into the 2025-26 season, he can't look back on the past.
Fans were sad about his exit, and it marked a new beginning in Pittsburgh. Now, GM Kyle Dubas will have a chance to put his mark in Penguins history without Sullivan in tow.
According to Josh Yohe of The Athletic, there wasn't a mutual decision to part ways:
The Penguins called it a «mutual decision,» but there really was nothing mutual about it. Sullivan didn't want to leave Pittsburgh. His loyalty wouldn't let him leave. If it were up to Sullivan, he likely would've stayed with Crosby and the Penguins for as long as possible.
The Pittsburgh Penguins Needed a Refresh According to Kyle Dubas
The General Manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Kyle Dubas, believed that the team needed to refresh the ranks, as Sullivan wouldn't be on board for a rebuild.
Yohe goes into detail about the painful breakup, as the now-Rangers head coach viewed loyalty as paramount; he remained that way to the end with Captain
Sidney Crosby.
The move wasn't easy for Dubas, who respected what Sullivan had accomplished in the NHL, but it seemed inevitable in Dubas's case.
But in the long run, after all of the steps were already taken, it seems that despite his resume and his bona fides, it made sense for the Penguins and Sullivan to part ways.
Now, he joins the Rangers for another stint with the purpose of
winning now.
