The New York Rangers could plug a hole in the lineup temporarily with a waiver wire claim. Two NHL teams, including one Metropolitan Division rival, and the Tampa Bay Lightning have placed players on waivers for claim.
One of those methods could be exercising a waiver claim, and that could involve claiming one or both of the forwards the Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals
have placed on waivers.
NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman announced that
Mitchell Chaffee (Tampa Bay Lightning), and Brett Leason (Washington Capitals) have hit the waiver wire today.
The New York Rangers Could Claim Either Forward to bolster their ranks
Chris Drury could use either Mitchell Chaffee or Brett Leason
as waiver claims and bolster the lineup, while Vinnie Trocheck remains sidelined.
Leason was a recent signing by the Washington Capitals to a two-way deal, and if he passes through waivers, he could end up suiting up for the AHL's Hershey Bears.
He was originally a draft pick by the Washington Capitals (56th overall) in the 2nd-round of the 2019 NHL Draft. He's played for the Anaheim Ducks for the majority of his career, where he played 62 games in 2024-25 and scored 12 points (5-7).
He'd be a depth addition, and nothing more at this point.
Mitchell Chaffee was waived after playing only 7 games for the Lightning and has scored a total of 0 points and accumulated 4 penalty minutes.
It's evident that he's played himself out of a spot in the Lightning lineup.
They could be quick, efficient adds, and without much to add to the salary cap if acquired. Chaffee makes $800 AAV (average annual value) and has one year left on his deal, while Leason makes $775K AAV.
