Trusted insider confirms when the New York Rangers will announce their opening-night roster
NHL Insider Vince Mercogliano reported today that it's likely the New York Rangers will finalize their opening night roster tomorrow. That report comes on the cusp of the regular season beginning this week, with the team facing off against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The New York Rangers haven't placed anyone on waivers today, which has some of us scratching our heads.
The team's roster hasn't been finalized by any means, as there remain three players in the lineup whose status is in question:
Brett Berard, who recently returned to the lineup;
Noah Laba, a six-point forward in six preseason games; and
Conor Sheary, on a PTO.
While this could be concerning, depending on how you view this, Vince Mercogliano believes the Rangers will be compliant with the salary cap by tomorrow.
The New York Rangers: New Faces Soon?
The New York Rangers lineup isn't set in stone, as this weekend is typically when teams make the
final decisions in regards to the lineup. But the preseason has been competitive enough for the Rangers that players like Conor Sheary and Noah Laba have forced Mike Sullivan's hand.
If the team is to rebound from their 5th place finish in 2024-25, they'll need a new philosophy, new lineup, and of course new players.
Chris Drury
stocked up on depth this postseason, as he felt that the top six couldn't be improved, and, like another original six general manager, played it conservatively. Instead, hold out for the 2026 free agency, which will be a star-studded affair.
The team needs to make a run to the playoffs, especially if they're cast aside doubters from last year who believe they're not the same team they were, who won the Presidents' Trophy in 2023-24.
They would be right, and now it's time for Mike Sullivan to prove them wrong.
