A New York Rangers forward has caught the hockey league off guard with the sudden announcement of his retirement at the age of 36.

An unexpected announcement was made on Wednesday, July 9th involving a member of the New York Rangers organization, Riley Nash.
Fans may hear the last name Nash and think of Rick Nash, a longtime Rangers legend, but there is no relation.
Oddly enough, Riley's brother, Brendon Nash, suited up for the Rangers organization's AHL team (Hartford Wolf Pack) many years ago.
A devastating injury suffered in the 2024 Calder Cup Playoffs with the Hartford Wolf Pack has led to his career ending as a member of the New York Rangers.
"During the 2010 offseason, Riley joined the Canes
via trade and would make his NHL debut with Carolina on December 21st, 2011. Riley would score his first career goal the very next season on March 3, 2013, adding two assists for a three-point night. Riley played 242 regular-season games for Carolina before signing with the NHLBruins
during the 2016 offseason, where he'd play the next two seasons. After signing with the BlueJacketsNHL in 2018 and playing 179 games with the club, Riley was acquired by the MapleLeafs ahead of the 2020 postseason. Riley later joined the
NHLJets, Arizona Coyotes, and TBLightning before playing the final of his 628 games with the NYRangers in 2023-24."

Congratulations, Riley, and welcome to the NHL Alumni Association!
Nash has taken it upon himself to address his sudden retirement announcement, and has addressed the current state of his body.

Riley Nash issues statement after announcing retirement

«With three wonderful young kids and the way my body has behaved over the past few years, it was time to take a step back as an older guy and let others chase their dream the same way I did,» he told Lowey. «I consider myself very fortunate to have played in front of my kids over the last few years. They helped me regain the passion and love for the sport I had as a kid. Now was the right time to step away.»
