Rangers announce shocking last minute roster transaction moments before puck drop
The New York Rangers wire is buzzing today, as we've seen Jacob Trouba head to the west coast. Victor Mancini was a defenseman who was called up after the move, and now GM Chris Drury isn't stopping.
Today the New York Rangers announced ahead of puck drop they were recalling defenseman Matthew Robertson from the Hartford Wolfpack.
Robertson was one of the defensemen who made an impact during training camp, and would reluctantly be sent down the AHL.
With recent moves, and defenseman Urho Vaakanainen out on IR, they will need someone in as an extra, and it looks like Robertson will fill that role.
Robertson was sent to the minors before the regular season, but he'll join the NHL club ahead of Friday's home game against Pittsburgh since Jacob Trouba was traded to the Ducks earlier in the day. Robertson hasn't yet made his NHL debut and is only expected to serve as an extra defenseman during warmups Friday, Mollie Walker of the New York Post reports.
If an injury should occur, we should expect Robertson to fill the gap in the lineup and show the Rangers front office he's capable of handling a role in the big league.
Since he was returned to the AHL after training camp he's played 19 games with the Wolfpack and scored 8 points( 1 G, 7 A).
For a defenseman with good size, he displays outstanding skating ability (he is smooth and makes it look effortless when on the ice). He can be used in all game situations, since he is very responsible with the puck. Displays outstanding hockey sense and passing ability. He sees the ice very well.
Robertson was drafted 49th overall in the 2nd round of the 2019 NHL Draft and is signed with the Rangers for another year with a $775K league minimum deal.
His deal will expire on July 1st, 2024 and he will be an RFA once July rolls around.
Robertson has played 209 games in the AHL with the Hartford Wolfpack and has scored 63 points( 11 G, 52 A) in four seasons with the Rangers affiliate.
