NHL Insider Issues Hot Take While Ranking And Bashing The New York Rangers Centennial Uniforms
The New York Rangers' jersey history has gone without too much controversy during their run, but this year might be different. The Athletic's panel took offense to what fans consider, is a "clean and crisp" Alternate for their Centennial Season. For The Athletic staff, it is anything but.
The Athletic's staff,
which includes Shayna Goldman, Julien Mackenzie, and Sean Gentille, would take them down a notch with their rankings, which weren't too kind.
Taking 10 teams that unveiled their alternate sweaters over the summer, Sean Gentille, Shayna Goldman, and Julian McKenzie ranked the Blueshirts' alternates a paltry No. 7 on the list, with Gentille giving the jersey a fair 7 out of 10 while Goldman and McKenzie gave it a 6.
"I don't think they're awful, but I don't think they're amazing. I like the placement of 'Rangers' on the front of their jersey. But I'd much rather see it on a darker blue base, kind of like the blue they wear on their current home jerseys. I also think the shoulders are too plain for me. Finally, this being the jersey for your centennial is underwhelming. I expected something bold, majestic and royal from one of the league's most iconic teams. But I will concede these jerseys look a bit better on television than I thought they would."
However, for some NHL fans, they like the classic, "dated" look it gives with the powder-blue colors, with a collar that resembles jerseys of the past, while the clean white lettering stands out in contrast
to the rest of the the uniform.
It's easy to read on the TV screen, and for the Rangers, it hearkens back to an era where hockey was flourishing in New York in the 1920s.
The New York Rangers Get Snubbed Again
The San Jose Sharks would rank 5th on the list for alternate uniforms this season, while the Detroit Red Wings would earn #1 for their Centennial jersey, which has a classic look dating back to the Detroit Cougars.
The Rangers' final ranking in the Athletic's list? #3.
While somehow, the Seattle Kraken's glow-in-the-dark uniforms land at #2. Despite the fact that teams don't play in the dark.
Regardless, we love the Rangers' classic look, but the team should've gone all out, gone full 1926 with the shell and skates to make it look full-on retro.
Nevertheless, #3 isn't too bad.
