New York Rangers GM Chris Drury needs to improve the lineup, and not just the top-six. Adding impact players is costly, and one two-way forward who could control play and help the Rangers on the ice nightly, would be pending UFA Andrew Mangiapane.

The New York Rangers are obviously in distress. Finishing 5th in the Metropolitan Division, while watching their rivals, the Washington Capitals, strut into the postseason off a hot Alexander Ovechkin.
Their rivals could be a solution for one of their problems, as they have one capable two-way forward who could address the lack of defense in the ranks.

Andrew Mangiapane

Andrew Mangianpane's contract expires at the end of the year, which pays him $5.8 million AAV. He signed the deal with the Calgary Flames after a wildly successful season in 2021-2022, which saw him post 55 points.
While this year is an off-year for Mangiapane, scoring only 14 goals and 28 points with the Capitals, he was an efficient scorer with only 13:02 TOI given to him by Spencer Carberry.
If you look at the underlying numbers for his production and the last three years before he arrived in Washington, the whole story is there:
2024-25: 51.27 GF% | 53.01 CF% | 54.08 xGF%
2023-24: 50.04 GF% | 53.21 CF% | 50.90 xGF%
2022-23: 56.61 GF% | 58.82 CF% | 57.70 xGF%

Not only does Mangiapane drive possession and scoring, CF%, and GF% he is also great at preventing goals against. Keep in mind, this is all the while he's only 5'11' and 183 pounds.
This season the Capitals were +0.15 xGF per 60 minutes when Mangiapane was on the ice which was six percent better than league average. In terms of expected goals suppressed, the Capitals allowed -0.14 xGA per 60 minutes which was six percent less than league average. In totality, Mangiapane was worth +5.1 sG this season according to Hockey Viz, and that puts him in first line territory in terms of production level.

An impact player, no matter the size.
While his next contract projects to be less than the $5.8 million he's earned when he played at a high level with the Flames, the Rangers could end up snagging him for less, and putting him back on the horse to production, as they could use someone in the top-six who has these capabilities.
He could very well be a top-six winger and score 30 goals again in the right situation, and would give Mike Sullivan flexibility in the lineup with some offensive punch that's been missing.
