The Chicago Blackhawks have a youth movement that is flowing through the ranks at the moment, with the 2024-2025 season ended, they will have to optimize the lineup, leaving the Blackhawks to place defenseman T.J. Brodie on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout.

According to a Chicago Blackhawks analyst the organization made this decision to move forward in the next phase of their rebuild. With the promotion of younger prospects into the lineup, there will be a shift in priorities at the end of the season.

New York Rangers looking to add depth to their blueline

However, this now gives the New York Rangers a discount on a depth defenseman that could help fix a broken blue line.
Unfortunately Brodie has been struggling in a Blackhawks lineup that is inexperienced, and could be considered "green", maybe a fresh start in New York could be what the depth defenseman could use, given his poor performance in Chicago.
He originally drew ire from Blackhawks fans as he got priority over a spot in the lineup over prospects like Ethan Del Mastro and former 1st-round pick Nolan Allan.
Sine then, T.J. Brodie has only managed to play 54 games this season with the Chicago Blackhawks and tallied a total of 10 points ( 2 goals, 8 assists) and was typically found in the bottom-four of the lineup.
As the New York Rangers continue to reshape their roster for the 2025-26 season, it's likely that they will need be in need of a veteran defenseman, with trade talks heating up around K'Andre Miller.
By no means would Brodie be a replacement for Miller but he would a veteran presence to the Rangers blueline especially if Chris Drury decides to move on from Carson Soucy as well.
