According to Rick Dhaliwal, the Washington Capitals have given defenseman Ethan Bear permission to speak to teams as he is an unrestricted free agent who could be on the radar for the New York Rangers.

The Rangers have made it clear over the past several weeks that the team would like to redesign and remodel their defence corps and Bear maybe one of the defensemen they're looking for.

Bear may come as a low-cost option for the Rangers

Bear had spent his entire season with the Hershey Bears as he was unable to crack the lineup with the Washington Capitals.
He was originally drafted in 2015 by the Edmonton Oilers, fifth round 124th overall and in his six years in the NHL, he has played for the Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes, Vancouver Canucks and the Washington Capitals.
His best season point wise was during the 2019-2020 season where he had played 71 games with the Oilers, scoring five goals with 16 assists for 21 points and was a - 4 with 33 penalty minutes.
His last contract was a two-year deal worth $4.13 million holding the $2.06 million cap hit. As an unrestricted free agent, it's likely that he will see a drop in his wage as he was unable to play for the capitals and may need to sign another contract as a prove it style deal.
If the Rangers were to sign him, it's likely a one-year contract at a much lower cost which could be beneficial for the Rangers in terms of depth, experience and a potential difference in style of play.

Drury will need to be creative this offseason

The Rangers currently hold $14 million in cap space and general manager Chris Drury will need to be creative as well over half the NHL is looking to upgrade their rosters and only have so many players available through unrestricted free agency or even trade.
The Rangers also have several free agents who all have arbitration rights including K'Andre Miller, Zachary Jones and Matthew Robertson.
It's safe to say the Rangers will be looking at other players throughout the league and adding a player like Bear could be helpful overall.
