The New York Rangers are making moves early on Friday morning as they announce a very unexpected contract extension with 24-year old restricted free agent defenseman.

Several reports have surfaced that confirm New York Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury and the organization has agreed to terms with defenseman Matthew Robertson on a two-year contract extension.
Bit of an unexpected move as the 24-year old has played the majority of his career in the AHL, as he played 60 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack this past season, where he only managed to tally one goal and 24 assists for a total of 25 points.
However, this was enough to establish his AHL career-highs in assist and points, along with leading the Wolf Pack defenseman in both categories.
#NYR and Matthew Robertson have agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension.
However, Robertson did manage to skate in two NHL games with the New York Rangers this past season, and posted a plus-three rating over those two games.
Along with making his NHL debut on April 14, 2025, against the Florida Panthers after being with the Rangers organization for the last six-years.
The 6-4, 209-pounder was originally selected by the New York Rangers in the second round, 49th overall, of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

According to several reports, Robertson was signed to a two-year deal. That is reported to be a two-way deal in the first year, and a one-way, league minimum in the second year.
The #NYR have resigned D Matthew Robertson to a two-year deal. A source said it is a two-way deal in the first year, one-way, league minimum in the second year.
The Matthew Robertson extension is a two-way deal on the first year, then a one-way at the league minimum on the second, per a source. He made his NHL debut at the end of the 2024-25 season.
Robertson is also a left-shot defenseman, something the New York Rangers have been searching for awhile now, even possibly a replacement for K'Andre Miller as his name continues to speculate in trade rumors this offseason.
