New York Rangers To Change Famous Goal Song "Slapshot" Following Series Of Unfortunate Luck
The New York Rangers' goal song "Slapshot" is iconic for its hooks, and it's two-word phrase "Hey" "whoa-oh-oh", which of course is ingrained into our memory each time the team scores a goal in MSG. But what is the history of the song, and it's creator Ray Castoldi?
The song "Slapshot" originated in 1995 and was performed by the band "Bad Apple". While it was written by Ray Castoldi, the band would perform it for the first time on January 20th, 1995.
The song is iconic for its catchy phrasing and easy-to-remember lyrics, especially when your favorite player scores a goal for the team.
Its inspiration is a mystery, as some people think some goal horns are born out of random circumstances. In this case, it might be truer than most as Castoldi, an organist, would pen the tune during the 1994-95 lockout.
His goal would be to create a unique song that would stand out amongst NHL franchises and be the "song" for the Rangers.
This came, of course, after the team won the Stanley Cup in 1994, and would be a signifier for the Rangers since.
Ever since, a portion of 'Slapshot' typically 35-40 seconds in length plays following the goal horn everytime a Blueshirt scores at home. Of course - fans at MSG sing along to the song whose lyrics begin with "woah" and then later include the ever-famous "Hey's!"
Of course, sometimes there's a double-edged sword to things, and for the team, "Slapshot" is iconic for how memorable it is. But since its birth, the team has failed to have major postseason success other than two trips to the Eastern Conference Finals in '22 and '24.
They did make it to the Stanley Cup finals in 2014, but were defeated by the Los Angeles Kings.
Could this year be the year the curse is lifted?
