New York Rangers defenseman Calvin de Haan chose to clear the air with the media after an emotional outburst that led to a firestorm of comments on social media.
The 33-year-old defenseman decided to talk to the media again and told many reporters that he had regret in some of the things that he had said about the organization.
De Haan spoke to Chris Drury and apologized about his remarks
«I was just going out on the ice and thought it was more of a small talk conversation with the reporters," de Haan said. «Maybe I should have chosen my words a little better, frankly.» Calvin De Haan
He explained that he spoke to general manager Chris Drury and apologized for his remarks as he along with the rest of the Rangers have been emotionally charged since the Rangers had been eliminate it from the playoff race a few days ago.
«I called (Rangers team president) Chris Drury right after I saw everything online and tried to do their honorable thing, and just tell him, 'Sorry. I didn't mean to belittle anyone or drag the organization through the mud,'» de Haan said. "I think it got really blown out of proportion, frankly. Like, it's on the NHL Network and stuff last night. Seeing it, I'm like, 'C'mon.' It's this 24-hour news cycle.» Calvin De Haan
De Haan was traded from the Colorado Avalanche on March 1st including Jusso Parssinen and two conditional draft picks in 2025 in exchange for
Hank Kempf,
Ryan Lindgren and
Jimmy Vesey.
De Haan unlikely to return to the Rangers next season
Despite his comments, De Haan will likely become an unrestricted free agent as his contract comes to an end as he currently holds an $800,000 cap hit.
It's unlikely that the Rangers will retain him as the team is set to make major changes to the lineup an to other aspects of the organization including likely their head coach.
«You've got to be realistic,» de Haan said. «I'm getting older in hockey years, and I've been one-year deals the past few years. It's been a little frustrating not being able to have someone trust me with a multi-year deal or anything, but I'm still gonna work and try to earn my contracts, obviously, and play well. But if the
opportunity arises, I'd like to still play.» Calvin De Haan
With their playoff aspirations over and the team continuing to sift through what was their season, the Rangers will likely remodel their organization and team as general manager Chris Drury has attempted to do so over the past year.
The Rangers have missed the playoffs for the first time after being crowned the presidents trophy winner last year as the best team in the NHL in the regular season.
