What is the game of hockey without rivalries? Winger Malcolm Spencer joined the New York Rangers today after being drafted 43rd overall in the 2nd-round of the 2025 NHL Draft. His best friend? 1st overall pick, and defenseman Matthew Schaefer, of the New York Islanders, this should prove to be an exciting rivalry for years to come.
Malcolm Spencer was drafted in the 2nd-round, 43rd overall in the 2025 NHL Draft by GM Chris Drury and the Rangers.
He joins a long line of players who have worn the blue shirt with pride and is projected to be a middle-six winger in the Rangers' lineup.
Spencer was originally expected to be a late 1st-round pick, but his stock dropped, and the New York Rangers were able to luck into drafting the former Erie Otters Alternate Captain.
This news is exciting, but for Malcolm Spence, this means a rivalry will begin anew for him and the Islanders. The same Islanders team that drafted his friend, Matthew Schaefer, first overall.
That should be an issue for Spence as he's a solid competitor and put up 73 points (32-41) in Erie last year. He's a sizable forward with a frame of 6'1", 203 pounds and shoots left-handed.
The reality of professional hockey is setting in, as new rituals begin, and bonds are challenged, and it appears the first test could very well be in the future when he takes the ice against Schaefer, whether in Bridgeport or on Long Island.
The draft is special because it's the end-product of someone's dream coming true, and for Spence, that doesn't mean it's without setbacks.
