The NHL trade deadline is finally underway, and the league has already seen it's fair share of notable transactions. That said, Carolina Hurricanes superstar Mikko Rantanen has been deemed as the hot item today, and it appears that the Finnish forward has landed himself a new gig.
According to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, Mikko Rantanen is on his way to the Dallas Stars after agreeing to terms on an eight year contract extension worth $96 million - which just happens to be his jersey number.
"Mikko Rantanen and the Dallas Stars are closing in on an extension
8 years, $12M AAV. Would get the deal done." Friedman said.
For the season, the 28-year-old has 27 goals and 70 points in 61 games. However, his offensive production dropped since joining the Hurricanes. In just 13 games with Carolina, the Finnish forward scored two goals and dished out four assists.
As much as it would've been amazing to have Rantanen on the New York Rangers, it was always just a pipe dream!
Realistically, Chris Drury only has one card to play to acquire a big name like Rantanen, but Chris Kreider's stock plummeted after suffering an upper-body injury.
While the NHL awaits the official trade announcement, the Dallas Stars roster just got a whole lot scarier.
With a forward like Mikko Rantanen added to the mix, the Dallas Stars are essentially a "lock" to make it back to the Western Conference Final.
