As the offseason continues to push forward, an emerging trade proposal has surfaced where the Toronto Maple Leafs would send Mitch Marner to the New York Rangers in exchange for Jacob Trouba and Alexis Lafreniere.

It's becoming clear that the Rangers are preparing to move away from Jacob Trouba as general manager Chris Drury and the rest of his management team are trying to get out from under his $56 million contract. This deal holds a cap value of $8 million per season and it's not aging well.

The exchange also brings Marner to the Rangers as the Maple Leafs face their biggest test in the Matthews era on whether they should move Marner along with his $10.9 million cap hit to free up space and to move off from Marner's underperforming playoff performances.

Adding a player like Marner to the Rangers would be an instant ignitor of offence as he has the capability of driving a line on his own and has been a 95 plus point player for the last several years. One of the issues Rangers faced last year was scoring five on five and Marner could help that issue greatly.

As for the Leafs, defence has always been their issue and adding a player like Trouba could certainly give them more grit and toughness that the team has lacked even though they have signed several players during free agency who will help them.

Lafreniere, has taken a big step forward in his game and would certainly give the Maple Leafs a young forward who could be in their lineup for many years to come.

After all, these are rumors and proposed trades, and it remains to be seen if Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving and Chris Drury are willing to make this deal happen.
