The Hockey News' writer Remy Mastey has penned a new article on New York Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin. The piece details how Igor Shesterkin took a stride this last season, but ironically, it was off the ice. Could this be the thing that puts him back into the winning mentality in 2025?

The New York Rangers' goalie, Igor Shesterkin, faced a lot of criticism in 2025-25. The goalie signed a rich $92 million contract at the beginning of the year, making him a higher-paid goalie than Carey Price.
This led to a barrage of non-stop derision of the former Vezina Trophy winner, who, instead of addressing the criticism, remained quiet.
«I don't read and I try to not hear about that,» Shesterkin said about all of the outside noise during the season. «I just focus on my game, on my practice and on my family. That's it.»

After December, the scrutiny would increase, as the Rangers would continue to decline and the playoffs seemed like a far-off dream.
Shesterkin and the team would bear the brunt of the anger and visceral emotions hurled toward them.

Igor Shesterkin and The New York Rangers: Broken

The goalie would reveal a harsh truth, as the Rangers, by all intents and purposes, were broken internally.
«In my mind, something broke during the season and (went) the other way,» Shesterkin said. «We couldn't handle it.

«Probably not too much confidence. If we can look on the last season before when we won (the) President's Trophy, if we're down 3-0 we still know we get back but during the season I didn't feel that sometimes.»

The Rangers' goalie was incredibly blunt during the exit interview about the team's status. Given it was Shesterkin who made these comments, you have to wonder what they were going through in 2024-25.
None of it had to be good.
But it appears out of the ashes from this past season, the former Vezina Trophy winner has found himself in a leadership role for the organization.
Could he leverage it into an underdog season for the Rangers?
