It was reported today that Reilly Smith would be extended by his expansion draft team, the Vegas Golden Knights. The Rangers originally acquired him in a trade from the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2024 offseason, but GM Chris Drury would trade him at the deadline in March.
The New York Rangers and
Reilly Smith didn't really have a great relationship during his short time in MSG. The Rangers thought Smith would be able to find his game that brought him and the Golden Knights fortune when he first arrived there as a misfit.
Instead of a 60-point year, the Rangers would see a lack of production and would have to deal him back to the Vegas Golden Knights at the trade deadline.
In 58 games with the Rangers this season, he put up a dismal 29 points (10-19) and would find himself in a playoff situation with the Vegas Golden Knights after being traded back so soon.
Smith is a capable playoff performer, and despite his disappointing stints in New York and Pittsburgh, GM Kelly McCrimmon is rewarding him with a new deal.
Smith gets another year in Vegas to the tune of a $2 million deal, a team-friendly contract as GM Kelly McCrimmon is on the hunt for big game, like
Mitch Marner.
It's unfortunate he was incapable of being the kind of top-six forward the Rangers needed to be successful.
But with hope, this could be another shot. He's more than a reliable forward, but an offensive weapon in Bruce Cassidy's system.
The Florida Panthers received a fourth-round pick when they lost Reilly Smith to the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 expansion draft.
Who'd know they lose a future Stanley Cup champion?
