The New York Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings completed a trade 76 years ago for Stanley Cup champion Norman "Bud" Poile, who helped construct the Broad St. Bully era Flyers.
76 years ago on this day, the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings combined for a trade that sent
Norman "Bud" Poile to Madison Square Garden for cash.
The deal was finalized for an undisclosed sum of money, which, back in 1949 New York Times didn't even have the lowdown on.
Poile joined the New York Rangers for the 1949-50 season, for only 28 games, and scored 9 points (3-6) before being shipped out to the Boston Bruins.
His Original Six tour would end soon after, as he'd join the USHL's Tulsa Oilers and leave the NHL for good.
His stint in New York was short, despite winning a Stanley Cup at the early stages of his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Poile played a total of 311 NHL games and scored 229 points (107-122).
After Poile's Professional Playing Career
Soon after, he'd quit playing professional hockey and jumped into coaching in the minor leagues.
And eventually Poile would find himself in a position that suited him best, as the GM of the Philadelphia Flyers as an expansion squad in 1967. He'd build the Flyers into the Broad St. Bullies team that won a Stanley Cup in 1973.
Poile won a Stanley Cup as an NHL player and a GM.
He'd later find a home as GM and later Vice President of the Vancouver Canucks, and an eventual HHOF inductee in 1990.
