Could Gabe Perreault be another building block in the piece of a Rangers team which could shed the disappointing shell of the 2024-2025 NHL season?
By all means Perreault has found himself as one of the best wingers in the NCAA, and has produced 1.34 PPG with Boston College. While this is a slight decline in production, he's been focusing on improving his game away from the puck, which should make someone like Peter Laviolette ecstatic.
"A couple examples you see are on the forecheck, where he's getting in quickly and disrupting the other team's breakout really well," the coach went on to say. "He's added that to his game. He always has demonstrated a high level when we've been in possession of the puck, but now he's being more efficient to retrieve pucks, win puck battles, get the pucks back, things like that."
While we ponder whether Perrault will sign his entry-level contract with the Rangers sooner or later, we should expect to see the result after Boston College, who at #1 in the NCAA will be battling against Bentley in the NCAA tournament.
A decision will come at some point soon after − but if he does sign, don't expect the Rangers to burn a year of team control by having him debut for a few games this spring.
While this is an idealized version of how the situation would play out, the contract would begin during the 2025-2026 season for Perreault.
The Rangers would do best to be patient with the dynamic 19-year old winger and not rush him into the NHL just to burn one-year of his ELC.
Instead they should place him in a situation that matches his skills and talents, while developing him into the winger he could be, who is a lethal offensive weapon could brush up on his backchecking as well.
Make no mistake, he's still a great goal-scorer and has put up enough points to fie for ninth in the country with 47 (15 goals, 32 assists).
But when he does make the NHL jump, don't jerk him around or bury him as a misplaced fourth-liner. Allow him to settle and grow in a situation that suits his impressive skill set.
When he does make it to the NHL, playing him with high-level talent in the NHL and don't push him up through the ranks like Kaapo Kakko place him with players who compliment his talents.
