The Detroit Red Wings would sign three-time Stanley Cup champion defenseman
Mike McEwen forty years ago to this day.
For the Red Wings, they thought they would be able to keep the defenseman around long-term.
Instead, McEwen would suit up for the Red Wings for 29 games during that 1985-86 season in the NHL.
He'd later show up in New York once again and play 16 games for the Rangers in 1985-86, scoring 7 points (2-5) in 16 games with the Blueshirts.
The Red Wings would later trade him back to the Blueshirts in return for Steve Richmond on December 26th, 1985.
McEwen's Career Post-Islanders Dynasty
These years were the post-Islanders dynasty years of his career. The last time he touched a Stanley Cup was during the 1982-83 season, when he'd play 42 games and score 13 points (2-11) for the Islanders.
Afterwards, he'd find himself as a journeyman in the NHL, playing a total of 716 games in the league between scoring 404 points (108-296) during his 12-year career.
He'd never find his former glory in the Red Wings jersey, but would play for the Washington Capitals, Los Angeles Kings, and Hartford Whalers along the way.
Mike McEwen would later find himself in a coaching role in the CHL for the Oklahoma City Blazers.
