Former New York Rangers forward and NHL veteran with 325 NHL appearances has officially secured a new deal heading into the 2025-26 season after signing a one-year contract to remain overseas.
Former New York Rangers forward, Ryan Spooner, who became a free agent at the end of the 2024-25 season and last month, has now joined a different team in the Kontinental Hockey League.
As Ryan Spooner has officially found a new club for the 2025-26 campaign the former New York Rangers forward will now be entering his seventh straight season in the KHL, a place he feels comfortable playin.
Former New York Rangers Forward Ryan Spooner Secures New Deal HEading Into The 2025-26 Season
Ryan Spooner will have now played for four different teams since he arrived to the KHL, as he has signed a new deal with the Shanghai Dragons, formerly know as the Kunlun Red Star, as they confirmed the signing on Saturday.
The club also announced that they've signed goaltender Andrei Kareyev, defenseman Doyle Somerby as well as forwards Nikita Popugayev and Nick Merkley.
"The Shanghai Dragons continue to unveil their newest additions. One-year contracts have been signed with goaltender Andrei Kareyev, defenseman Doyle Somerby and forwards Ryan Spooner, Nikita Popugayev and Nick Merkley." the Dragons said on X.
Dragons General Manager Igor Varitsky addressed the media following the new signings on Saturday, and had nothing but great things to say about the former Rangers forward:
"Ryan Spooner is no stranger to the KHL, and his strengths are well known: elite skating, speed, hockey IQ and a team-first mentality. He can ignite the offence and move the puck deep into the offensive zone, contributing both at even strength and on the power play." Varitsky said.
Spooner, managed to play two seasons with the New York Rangers, after he was traded from the Boston Bruins during the 2017-18 season where he made a total of 36 appearances and tallied a total of 18 points ( 5 G, 13 A) before being traded to the Edmonton Oilers during the 2018-19 season.
