New details have emerged regarding former New York Rangers forward Reilly Smith being traded back to the Vegas Golden Knights after a short stint with the Rangers organization.

The Rangers acquired Smith in the offseason in hopes to be the missing piece for the Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider line. However, the 33-year old forward didn't quite reach expectations, so with the Rangers in no position to hold onto their UFA's they decided to make a trade.

New York Rangers and Vegas Golden Knights were in trade talks for a period of time

Now that we're about two weeks past the NHL trade deadline, according to Remy Mastey of The Hockey News, Vegas Golden Knights General Manager Kelly McCrimmon revealed that the Rangers and Golden Knights were actually in contact for a «period of time» leading up to the trade.
«We had had talks all week and decided that Reilly was our guy,» Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon said.

Smith spent six season with the Golden Knights and even won a Stanley Cup with the organization, so it's safe to say Smith was excited to return back to an organization that he is familiar with.
«When you get traded, there's always so much new change, not just the stuff on the ice, but everything around it,» Smith said. «So to be able to come back here and have so much familiarity, it definitely feels like coming home a little bit.»

During Smith's time with the Rangers, he managed to tally 10 goals, 19 assists and 29 points while averaging 15:36 minutes per game.
